10 Birthday Nights
Saturday, Nov 7, for 8 people. In all 10, everyone gets ready once, wears one outfit and arrives once. The most anyone moves between stops is a 5-minute walk.
Ranked by how well each fits what you told me: rare, dark, easy to talk, near $3,000. The order is my judgment. Prices are my totals for the whole night, built the same way each time from published prices where they exist and my estimates otherwise: food, $80 a person for drinks at dinner, two cocktails each if there's a second room, tax, tip and Ubers. Nothing is confirmed for Saturday.
1 My pick
Mott 32, Theatre Room
About $3,150
A closed private room that seats exactly 8, near-black with a magenta line of light, and Peking duck carved at your table. Nobody else in the room, one table, everyone can hear each other, and the carving is your light activity.
Your night: Arrive 7:30 and stay in your room. The bar downstairs runs until 1am if people want one more.
Catch: It's polished, so dress business casual. The duck needs 24 hours' notice. The $1,800 minimum is from a 2024 brochure, so confirm it. No outside cake. Ubers may surge when the Leafs game lets out.

Grey Gardens, the wine room
About $2,200 to $2,700
A fully private room downstairs beside the wine cellar, with one long table against a glass wall of bottles. Five courses at $125 a person, and the room is yours from 5pm to midnight, so nobody ever rushes you.
Your night: Walk over, about 10 minutes from your place. Sit at 7 and stay until midnight.
Catch: It's a beautiful room rather than a story, and it's warm rather than dark. The higher price assumes an old $2,000 minimum, so ask for the current one.

Bushido, inside Casa Loma
About $4,650
The rarest setting here. It opened Oct 23 for 16 guests a night: cocktails in the castle's study and round room, a seated 10-course Japanese dinner in the Chinoiserie suite, then dessert and tea in Lady Pellatt's suite.
Your night: Arrive 7:45 for the single 8pm seating and move through the castle with the evening.
Catch: Well over your $3,000 ideal, and it leans formal. You'd share the night with up to 8 other guests. The $150-a-person deposit goes toward the bill, but you lose it for anyone who drops out.

TONO, then TOKI
About $3,400, plus any private TOKI price
Dinner at Akira Back's TONO in the W hotel, then through a heavy maroon curtain into TOKI, a vinyl bar with red velvet couches that opened in May.
Your night: Arrive 8pm for the group tasting. Around 10, walk through the curtain and stay until TOKI closes at 1am.
Catch: TOKI is a serious listening room with DJs on Saturdays, so it may not be easy to talk unless you book it privately. It takes walk-ins, and sofa nooks could split your group. The private Loft lists 10 people as its minimum, so ask if 8 works.

Lyla, then Prequel
About $2,650
A four-course dinner in Lyla's dark main room on Queen West, then a 5-minute walk to Prequel, a black-panelled bar hidden behind apothecary doors.
Your night: Sit at Lyla at 6:30. Walk over at 8:45. Stay at Prequel as long as you like, it's open until 2am.
Catch: Neither table is closed off, and a diner called Lyla's music loud on a Saturday. Lyla's private Gold Room is gold and lit rather than dark, and some listings start it at 9 guests. Prequel books groups of 7 or more by email or form and can take 48 hours, so send it Wednesday.

Little Sister, then Bar XXX
About $3,600, my estimate
Shared dinner upstairs, then a private booking of the speakeasy directly below, which made Canada's 100 Best Bars this year. A whole bar for your 8, the closest thing here to your arcade idea.
Your night: Sit upstairs at 6:30. Around 8:30, go down one floor and the room is yours.
Catch: The private price isn't published. I assumed $1,500, and the real number decides this one. If they can't close it, the bar is walk-in only, so 8 seats aren't promised.

Nobu, the Tasting Room
About $3,300, plus any minimum
You walk through Nobu's kitchen to a hidden 10-seat room behind shoji-style doors, with one round table where everyone can talk. The entrance is the moment.
Your night: Arrive 7:30, walk through the kitchen, and stay at your table.
Catch: The most dressed-up option here. The room minimum isn't published and could push it past your budget. Book through their form or by phone. Ubers may surge when the Leafs game lets out.

The Tower, Broadview Hotel
About $2,400, plus any minimum
A private room at the top of an 1891 landmark, under a ceiling of chandeliers, with the hotel's rooftop bar on the same floor.
Your night: Sit at 6:30, family style. Around 9, cross the floor to the rooftop bar.
Catch: The food is the weak spot: the $99 menu is bao, skewers and linguine, and the better $130 menu needs 7 days' notice, so ask for an exception. The rooftop reopens that same Saturday after a short break and can get noisy. Rooftop tables for 8 or more go through dinewithus@thebroadviewhotel.ca.

La Plume, then Bonne Nuit
About $2,500
Dinner at La Plume at The Well, then a hidden Paris-style speakeasy in the same building. A local guide says you get in through a door disguised as a washroom stall.
Your night: Sit at 6:30. Around 8:30, go through to Bonne Nuit, where your group booking covers 3 hours.
Catch: The dining room is bright, and the newest review I found says "Food was just not there." Bonne Nuit has a DJ on Saturdays, so it gets tight, and it often hosts private events, so check Saturday first. It needs a $450 minimum and a pre-selected menu.

Lunch Lady, Saigon Supper Room
About $1,850, plus any minimum
A private room behind sliding doors on Ossington, with a $90 Vietnamese set menu that has dishes you can't order out front. The brand started with the Saigon cook Anthony Bourdain made famous. The easiest one to book, and the cheapest.
Your night: Arrive at 7, slide the doors shut, and eat family style.
Catch: Fun and casual rather than rare or dark. It's the budget option here. The room minimum and time limit aren't published.

My birthday dinner is this Saturday, Nov 7, in the evening. Keep it free, details Thursday.
Can you make it? Tell me by tonight, plus any allergies.

Don't Tell, a red-velvet speakeasy on Ossington, would be perfect as a full takeover, but its hire listing only covers Saturday daytime, so Saturday night is a long shot. One email is worth it: info@donttell.ca. Also passed on: a skyline penthouse (it's the private chef idea again, in a rented room with a slow host), Foy House, an entire 1888 mansion (pale rooms, no candles, alcohol permit), DaNico's chef's table (white tablecloths), Okeya (bright room, over budget), Karasu (organ meats, no substitutions, shared counter) and Mar'aa on the 51st floor (I couldn't confirm a view from its private room).
